Building of a community house and a clay oven to encourage the sense of community between native borns and migrants.
The two building activities were essential for the establishment of the Intercultural garden and contribute now to common activities and intercultural exchange. Intercultural exchange was also motivated through the experience of earth building. The practical handling of eco-friendly construction materials enhanced the participants’ consciousness about sustainability and resource protection. Side-events fostered neighbourly relations as well as the interconnection of garden occupants, associations and initiatives within the quarter.
The project execution was divided into the planning phase, public relations and the construction phase.
The garden’s design was assessed in close reconciliation with the core group and introduced to all participants. Various events promoted the project and motivated the participants. Also an advisory board was appointed because a great deal of convincing had to be done to arrive at the neighbourhood.
The construction phase was shaped by strong pressure of time because the building activity could be started not until the end of July. All works from the excavation, the concrete and wood works, the building of the green roof, the masonry with adobes to the clay plastering works were executed by the garden occupants supported by the members of Besser Leben in Lichtenberg and BAUFACHFRAU Berlin e.V. At the end of December the opening party could be celebrated.
In 2006 the project was awarded as good practice example at the Week of Sustainability.
