Construction of an intercultural garden at a lot measuring 2000 sqm at the Aubert Street 1. The fallow land has been cultivated by natives and migrants originating from different countries. The garden is open to different activities and all residents of the quarter.
BAUFACHFRAU Berlin e.V. not only guided the construction works but also supported the garden project with respect to the contract negotiations with the borough and public relations. By means of a terrain model simulations on the garden layout were carried out with the occupants. Besides the collective facilities, such as a pergola with a lounge, a tool shed, a herb spiral, a barbecue area with clay oven, 20 parcels measuring 30 sqm were planned. The first public garden party with Russian music and food took place at June/30th/2007.
Since July/1st/2007 the project was supported by a further employment promotion of the Job Center Pankow. Eight commited women and men carried out extensive drainage works und the construction of the tool shed. At the end of 2007 the tenancy agreement was signed. In 2008 a water pump was installed, a compost toilet is planned and the garden is thriving. Besides gardeners from Germany, Vietnam, Mongolia and Ghana the Birkenhof-School uses a parcel as a school garden.
