The large suburban housing estate Frankfurt Alley South provided only few and untended green spaces and areas for playing, sports and relaxation. The space between Gürtel Street and Tasdorfer Street possessed less amenity values and served as a dog run.
The green space was part of the Green Belt, a scheme funded by the program Urban II, which aimed to connect particular living quarters. Therefore a continuous promenade with direct connection to the Gürtel Street up to the Schulze Boysen Street was planned as longitudinal development for pedestrians and bicyclists. Also attractive rest and common areas for all generations should be created.
The development of the project began in Summer 2002 und reached in December 2002 with the selection of Dipl. Ing. Ariane Röntz’ design an important step in realisation. The first construction phase between Gürtel Street and Tasdorfer Street began in June 2003. To create space for open areas, promenade and rest areas, the green space had to be cleaned of bushes and trees. After clearing a deposit space, formerly used by the police, in January 2004 the second construction phase followed. The promenade was lengthened up to the Schulze Boysen Street. Also skater elements, a street ball field, a trampoline and rest areas with patches, benches and hammocks were installed.
The former police building has been torn down in November 2004. Within a third construction phase the last area was grassed and included into the green space.
The building activitiy was finished in December 2004. In May 2005 the green space was opened up.
