Project target

The one-year ‚Bauhandwerkerinnenprojekt’ developed socially responsible work concepts for women working in the building enterprise. The scheme’s aim was the integration of the participants into the labour market.
The School Garden was one of several construction and design exercises. The women received the opportunity to learn of each other and fulfil challenging tasks of high public interest. Professional instruction and mutual support within the group enabled the women to execute a wide variety of works. Also they received the opportunity of exploring and trying out unknown areas of expertise to improve their occupational opportunities

Project steps

The eco-friendly school garden was part of the complex, EU-funded reshaping of the schoolyard. In close cooperation with the school (children, teachers and parents) and the Department of Environment and Nature design concepts were developed, funding possibilities found, and the women took over the organisation and execution of the construction works.
Due to the feral condition of the garden intensive preparatory works were necessary. Patches, lawns, herb spiral, damp and arid habitat, the green classroom, a barbecue area with seats, a tool and a greenhouse were built.
The pupils were regularly involved in the redevelopment of the garden. They learned the principles of nature protection and participated in the building of a deadwood hedge, the excavation of the sod for the vegetable patches and the creation of the arid habitat.
